This week I went to London I went round boutiques and focused on fabric choices and details.
Monday :
Izzey Miyake definitely related to my research and development the most.The garments were mere shapes but were treated the use of manipulation throughout the collection was astonishing .Even folded and sat on counters the fabric transformed into works of art.Graphic and delicate.With astounding effect.
Hussein Chalayan as always had a theatrical layout for his collection.With two caped manikans holding the clothes rail either side. It was as if the Clothes were being lead to their death!Chalayan’s collection had a cleaver use of knits ,top stitching detail with simple panels. The collection seemed softer than his usual ,however constructed with intense intelligence .
I enjoyed Comm De Garcons collections and use of inspirational structures .There was alot of raw edges and accessories .They had shoulder panels made from jacket linings attached to full tailored jackets, very juxtaposed, which I thought was almost quite theatrical and fun!
Rick Owens caught my eye.I’m one for using alot of black but this guy has a real talent in using this shade .The contrast in fabrics was bewitching and boy this guy can design one hell of a collection .Pretty new to my eye in all honesty I hadn’t spent much time to exploring his work.Which I can now see was a mistake. Hard edged and gripping.
Tuesday:
Today I explored the V&A gallery .. I think I was a little ambitious thinking I would make it to any other gallery.There was so much to see and be inspired by.
“Power of making”
A free exhibitions on using shape and everyday objects to express our creativity .
“who do we want to be?”
This exhibition was about understanding the materials and the chemical process of creating art through never again, used objects.
Then I went on to the Postmodern Exhibition which was incredible and really helped me pin point which direction I want to take me collection ;
To me this exhibition fashioned post modernism as;
controversial ,drastic departure from modernism , a new world , complexity and contradiction, shattered established ideas about style and freedom .
I was drawn to the works of those who explored post modern techniques for pleasure ,for a culture life style .There was a delight in the pop culture ,symmetry and simplicity .
many techniques caught my eye : pointillism being one of them,postmodernism embellishment (no surface untouched)rough and ready and Bricolage .
Blade runner was the most influential part for me, with its man vrs machine theme and pvc,lighting effects and even glass. I’m excited to dive into this 80’s film searching for concepts and interesting links to my project.I cant wait to explore this film in more detail
Grace Jones was also a highlight and the advert for the whole exhibition .. She always really lets me remember how artist effect both fashion and music.The styling within her costumes were something to be relished . Her essence and performing style was so bizarre and theatrical .
Karol Armitage -dubbed the “punk ballerina” was an important aspect of dance,theater and even film
The Graphic postmodernism section was something I adored:
Wolfgang Wein gaunt-without abandoning the grid ,retained it in order to attack it
I was also very found of Aprid Greiman who used methods of deconstruction , colour ,quatition and distortion within his works, which to me is a reference to how real fashion/style should be made.
I was intrigued by Aprid Greimans method of using no machines/computers.
Being almost against the machine, man made , tactile -real.
